An Oxford is defined as any lace-up shoe that doesn’t come above the ankle. Here is a guide to the types of Oxfords on the market:
- Wingtips are the most common type of Oxford and resemble a bird spreading its wings.
- Bluchers look like they are segmented, with the sides sewn on the top/front section.
- Balmorals, a classic British-style Oxford, have no seams beyond the toe cap. They look like they are made of only one piece of leather.
- Cap toe Oxfords have a separate piece of leather on the toe and may be plain or decorated.
- Saddle Oxfords have a saddle-shape of leather over the instep. The the color of the saddle shape contrasts the color of the rest of the shoe.
- Kilties have a tongue with fringed leather draped over the instep.
